Houthi militiamen attack administrative and academic figures at University of Sana’a

Administrative board of “the union of faculty members and their assistants” at University of Sanaa issued an important statement, revealing details of the recent assault incident that happened against a number of professors on campus of the university by elements of the Houthi group on Saturday morning.

According to this statement, the abused academics got surprised when groups of students, staff members and some elements not belonging to the university but to the so-called forum of Ansar Allah were brought to their place where they were at an expanded consultative meeting bringing together faculty members and their assistants at faculties of Arts and Sciences on Saturday morning.

These elements, as stated, sparked chaos inside the hall where one of them rushed toward the head of the union Dr. Mohammed Al Dhahiri at the podium, trying to stab him with a knife.

Dr. Faten Abdo Mohammed, a female professor at the university, was also attacked by the head of the so-called "Academic Forum" affiliated to the Iran-backed Houthi militia, Dr. Mohammed Al Makhedi who is charged with many assaults on faculty members and had clearly and publicly made threats against the union by saying: Saturday is our appointment.

The statement also pointed out that the attacks has taken place outside the hall as well, when a member of students Forum assaulted Dr. Ibtisam Shamsan.

Moreover, the statement paid attention to a series of assault incidents suffered by university professors including Dr. Ibtisam Al Mutawakkil who was assaulted and insulted during a council meeting of Faculty of Arts and Dr. Hisham Naji and Dr. Jameel Aon who were subjected to offensive words.

Security men on campus did not deal seriously with the incidents whose perpetrators were, as came in the statement, within easy reach of them. All of that, as mentioned, happened in the presence of the university president who did nothing about all of this.

In another context, the statement spoke of false official papers issued on behalf of the union, considering that as a kind of counterfeiting and slander.

At the end of the statement, it was asserted that the union would go ahead with its activities, including a meeting on Sunday at Faculty of Medicine, calling on its members to continue escalating as planned until demands are met.

It’s worth mentioning that the humanitarian crisis keeps worsening in the Arab world’s poorest country, Yemen, where cholera is spreading, millions of people are struggling to get enough food and millions have been forced to leave their homes.

For three months, the de facto authority represented by the Iran-backed Houthi militia and ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh has been unable to pay the salaries of most of the 1.2 million civil servants.
