Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) on Saturday evening marked the signing of the book "The Return of the Quran -Onto the road to Revival and Religious Reformation" by the Islamic thinker and scholar Abdullah Al-Qaissi.
During the signing ceremony, which was attended by a host of thinkers, scholars, poets and intellectuals, Bushra Al-Surabi, the executive director of the WJWC, said that there has recently been much rhetoric on the need for reviving religious discourse. She highlighted that the rise of Islamic movements which dominated the socio-political scene, coupled with the heated debate on the alleged responsibility of Islam for the 9/11 attacks, have resulted in the calls for reviving such a discourse gaining momentum. Surabi pointed out the importance of such a publication on religious revival and reformation, which comes at a time when Islam is being under ferocious attacks from its enemies who deliberately tarnish its image by claiming that it incites violence, hatred and terrorism, in her own words. "We, at the WJWC, consider ourselves very lucky. While the waves of jingoism, sectarianism and backwardness are rising, we release a book that spurs reflection and meditation on many things not deemed religious facts in as much as they are humanistic interpretations that can be true or wrong," she remarked.
"It is high time that we rethought lots of maxims and truisms in order for us to be real believers" she noted. She urged all those interested to read the publication even if they didn't agree with the notions mentioned therein. "It is important that we believe in our ability to think freely of many issues, including our religious legacy," she highlighted. For their part, Abdul Raqeeb Al-Ghanimi, a researcher, and Waleed Damaj, a writer and poet, presented a critique of the book in which they praised the researcher for broaching this highly significant and highly sensitive topic that focused on the interpretation of lots of social and juristic phenomena from a contemporaneous perspective that keeps pace with the new transformations. They indicated that the researchers properly answered many pressing questions over the dominance of Islamic thinking on the cultural and social domains as well as the role of Quran in authenticating the impact of social changes on people's life, and closing the gaps in the Islamic thought and its role in the backwardness of the Islamic civilization that once dominated the whole world.
For his part, Abdullah Al-Qaissi, an Islamic thinker and researcher, gave a brief presentation on the objectives, contents, definitions and phases of the research that stressed the importance that both Quran and Islamic thinkers must revival the Islamic thought, given that the Islamic world is facing the problem of making absent both the Quran and reason.
He asserted that the problem lies in religious thought rather than religion, and that there is need for obliterating all the negative accumulations, flaws and misconceptions inherent in the religious thought, which badly affected the tolerant religion of Islam and besmirched its image by reviving the Islamic thought through researches, studies and the extensive deliberations of the topics and issues of concern to youth, society, and the entire world.
The 525-page book comprises four chapters dealing with nearly 100 notions on the topic of revival and religious reformation, the concept of the path of return, definitions, the phases of relapse of Muslim reason, accord and discord, the principles of faith, and the consummate and similar verses of Quran. The publication also touched upon religious rituals, the Islamic Shariah, its sources, women's issues and other jurisprudential issues in current age, citing holy Quranic verses, Prophet's tenets and perspectives of different religious persuasions. It also contains a collection of researches and articles on the revival of Islamic thought. The researcher adopted a scientific approach to his research in such a way as to obviate suspicions.
