Houthi Shelling Injures Three in Taiz; Rising Violence

TAIZ, Yemen (December 3, 2024) —  Three civilians were injured Monday morning when Houthi militia artillery fire struck a residential neighborhood in Taiz’s Al-Mudhaffar District.

Local sources reported two shells, believed to be mortars, landed in the “Block 4” neighborhood. One exploded near charitable water tanks, injuring the three civilians. The second shell killed several livestock and damaged property.

The attack, launched from Houthi positions on Al-Khamseen Street, caused widespread panic among residents of the densely populated area.  The shelling occurred during the normal daily activity of residents seeking essential goods and services.

This incident follows a similar attack on Maqbanah District, west of Taiz, just two days prior.  That attack, carried out by Houthi drones targeting a school and market, resulted in 14 civilian casualties, including children.

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) strongly condemned these attacks, stating that the targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure constitutes a war crime and a clear violation of international humanitarian law, including the Geneva Conventions.  The organization called on the international community to condemn these actions and hold those responsible accountable.

The ongoing military escalation in Taiz, coupled with a severe siege, has created a dire humanitarian crisis, leaving residents without basic necessities.  Women Journalists Without Chains emphasized the urgency of international action to address these escalating attacks and alleviate the suffering of the Taiz population.
