Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) expresses hope that December 8, 2024, will mark a new beginning for Syria, one founded on respect for human rights and an end to the violations faced by Syrians.
This vision is rooted in the legitimate demands articulated by the Syrian people since the spring of 2011. The organization calls for the immediate release of all women detained in Syrian prisons and emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the protection of women’s rights in this new reality.
Additionally, they advocate for supporting the active role of Syrian women in rebuilding their society, ensuring that their voices and contributions are integral to the nation’s future. Since late November, Syrian opposition factions have seized control of several provinces following intense clashes with al-Assad regime forces. Recent developments indicate that they have taken over Aleppo, Idlib, Hama, Homs, Daraa, and Sweida.
In a significant escalation, these factions entered the Syrian capital, Damascus, at dawn on Sunday—14 years after the outbreak of protests that were part of the Arab Spring revolutions. During this time, Syrian civilians have faced severe repression and horrific violations by Assad's regime, including field executions, mass massacres, arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearances, and torture.
Following the events of December 8th, Women Journalists Without Chains holds the parties controlling Syrian provinces accountable for taking measures to protect the rights of the Syrian people and uphold their freedom and dignity. WJWC expresses its full support for the Syrian people during this pivotal moment, calling upon all local and international actors to support this historic transition and collaborate to foster democracy and sustainable peace in Syria.
The organization emphasizes the critical need to prioritize women's rights and support their active participation in rebuilding Syrian society, recognizing their longstanding role in the struggle for freedom and dignity. WJWC believes this marks the true beginning of a new Syria, one where all citizens are equal under the rule of law. Long live a free Syria! Long live the Syrian people's struggle for dignity and freedom!
