Women Journalists Without Chains has released its annual report titled "The Uncertain Fate of Press Freedom in MENA (Annual Report)," which delves into the state of press freedom throughout the MENA region in 2023. This publication coincides with the global observance of World Press Freedom Day on May 3rd.
Employing a meticulous monitoring approach, the report documents violations against press freedom, freedom of opinion, and freedom of expression within the covered region. It reveals that press freedom in the Middle East and North Africa is currently facing its most dire challenges, with 141 journalists killed, primarily in Gaza, due to ongoing Israeli attacks since October 7th, 2023.
This report is released during a critical juncture when freedom of opinion, expression, and access to information are criminalized in numerous countries across the region, carrying severe penalties such as the death penalty.
Repressive regimes intentionally amplify penalties for charges linked to journalistic activities. Additionally, these regimes have recently enacted new laws pertaining to cyberspace, primarily designed to legitimize information suppression and impede public access to knowledge.
The report strives to provide a comprehensive analysis of the state of press freedom in the region, shedding light on the myriad challenges facing free journalism. It also puts forward practical recommendations aimed at enhancing press freedom and ensuring the safety of journalists.
