Women Teacher Killed in Aden: WJWC Calls for Accountability

The brutal murder of teacher Nasreen Adeeb on Tuesday, January 14, 2025, in the Mansoura district of Aden has sparked outrage and condemnation.

Women Journalists Without Chains (WJWC) described the killing as a heinous crime that reflects the alarming rise of domestic violence and the failure of Yemen’s legal and security systems to protect vulnerable individuals.

The crime occurred on 90 Street when the victim's husband intercepted a school bus carrying Nasreen and several students. Armed with a firearm, he shot her in front of the students, killing her instantly. This shocking act of violence underscores the extent of systemic negligence, as the victim had reportedly filed multiple complaints and sought protection from the security authorities prior to her death.

According to information obtained by WJWC, Nasreen had previously endured repeated threats and assaults from her husband, including an incident where he placed a hand grenade outside her family’s home. Despite these alarming actions and her legal attempts to secure a divorce, the authorities failed to intervene effectively. A video shared by activists even showed the perpetrator assaulting Nasreen on the street days before her murder, but no action was taken.

Citing Nasreen's death as the reason, the judicial authorities dismissed her divorce case shortly after her murder. The WJWC strongly criticized this decision, which has sparked widespread backlash and highlighted the judicial system's failure to address the systemic issues that contributed to her tragic death.

The organization emphasized that Nasreen’s case is not an isolated incident but a glaring example of the failures within Yemen’s security and judicial systems to protect women from domestic violence. It warned that such negligence perpetuates impunity, leaving more women at risk of violence.

WJWC also highlighted that the threats have not ceased with Nasreen’s death. Human rights sources reported that the victim's brothers have received direct death threats from the perpetrator, further exposing the inadequacy of the security system in ensuring their safety.

In response, WJWC called for a series of urgent measures to address the situation. These include the immediate arrest of the perpetrator and his prosecution to the fullest extent of the law, as well as providing immediate protection for the victim’s family members, particularly her brothers, who continue to face threats.

The organization also demanded an independent investigation into the crime and the failures of security and judicial authorities in protecting Nasreen. Additionally, it emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of security and judicial policies to implement effective mechanisms for addressing domestic violence and holding negligent authorities accountable.

WJWC reiterated its demand for justice for Nasreen Adeeb and urged the government and relevant authorities to prioritize the protection of women in Yemen. It called for stronger accountability mechanisms and the establishment of a robust legal framework to deter violence against women and ensure such crimes do not go unpunished.

The organization further highlighted the importance of providing psychological and social support to Nasreen’s children, who are now left to cope with the devastating loss of their mother. WJWC appealed to all stakeholders to work collectively towards creating a safer and more just environment for women in Yemen, stressing the urgency of preventing similar tragedies in the future.
